[Discussion] Healthy eating misinformation(s)

Hey chaps! To devote a brief background about who I am: I’m a medical student doing an MD/ Ph.D. platform at the University of Gottingen, Germany( cognitive neuroscience for who’s interested ).

I’m here today because I discovered lots of confusion, disbelieves and some misinformation in the subreddit since I assembled it, especially on topics like “healthy vs unhealthy”. I will try to create a thread where we can discuss and debate this topic if you are interested, but firstly I will try to give a brief and concise medical point of view.

Let’s be clear, I don’t want to be that guy, but we should start looking at what healthful measures and why I( and most medical people I know ), prefer the period nutritious if we are debating about nutrition. Healthy is inglobed into nutrition as a word , not vice versa. If you seem it up, you will see that healthful is defined as an adjective( of food or drink) that provides nutrients, substances needed for life and growth; healthful to munch. Healthy, on the other hand, is defined as something good for your health, but this definition has some flaw and I will get to it.

It’s easier for organizations like WHO( World Health Organization) and/ or universities to use health and unhealthy as periods since globally we have not only undernutrition problems( third world countries problems ), but too linkages to overeating and genuine hunger( most industrialized countries) with chronic pathologies as consequences. That’s why you will see something more general along the lines of: “A healthful diet helps to protect against malnutrition in all its forms, as well as non-communicable diseases( NCDs ), including such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, motion and cancer.”

As you can see, the expression healthful is used to simplify a highly complex and current question we have not only in our society but across multiples cultures. So, because of this, we need an easier and more understandable period for everyone.

Q.E.D. Now, having said this, you are eligible to immediately watch why in medication the call “healthy”, if used properly in a discussion and debate, is not glowered upon, since we need to look at every single variable regard nutrition on a more broad-spectrum, like, for example, all the micro and macronutrients for the correct and optimal run of the( human) organization. Exclusively then YOU know if a diet design( AUT. what you eat) is optimal for your statu, your family history and genes, ethnicity, senility, gender, daily practices, culture et cetera.

You can’t oversimplify such a wide concept excluding all these variables and analysis to only name something in either in or out; it doesn’t operate that way.

More so: there are tons of different diet intentions( mediterranean, vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, paleo, keto, dukan, atkins, hcg, ulf, fresh and more ). If you start analyzing what’s considered healthful and what’s considered harmful for each one of the single food proposes, you know what the common denominator will be? Well, a nice, lustrou and clean sheet with nothing on it.

I will include after this last thought some generators to go through if you are interested in learning more about the topic and why healthy shouldn’t be used over nutritious in a discussion, roots that will include both non-athletes and non-enhanced advanced contestants.

What should you take from this? Don’t realise nutrition as either health or undesirable. Simply opt for nutritious foods whenever you can, treat yourself with something less healthful from time to time for psychological state if you require it, beware dosages( in both nutritious and little healthful nutrients ).

As you can see the notions is complex, but you can simplify it this route. Time don’t OVERsimplify it because then you will create a brand-new spectrum of( mental) troubles( e.g. orthorexia ). And that’s my field of study, that’s why I exercised my time to create this thread.

Bottom line: if you start labeling menus in only two categories, you are able to then enter very important troubles like eating disorders.

That’s just some material, I didn’t want to go too heavy on cites( since we could also quote different medical works ), but some increasing could be useful for those who are more strange than the others.
